When I am asked: “Can I break a diamond?” I have to clarify the answer because, actually, from the top, a diamond is extremely difficult to break. But you will notice that all rings with it exposed may have chips around the girdle, the edge of the stone. Indicating that the edge of the diamond is easier to break. The top of the diamond is very, very difficult to break; it’s practically impossible. The idea is if you can create a design that can protect the edges of the diamond, it will be a safer design.
It’s not necessarily true that all exposed diamonds will break, but it happens.
